A Long Overdue Update

Wow, talk about falling behind on the blog. I just checked, and the last time I posted was January 20. Three whole months? Goodness.

Part of the reason for my blog absence is that our adoption process has been a bit in limbo for the past couple of months...more details on that to come soon. The end result is that after much prayer, thought, and discussion, we have decided to switch agencies. We will still work with Lifelink for our home study, but we will now be working with Americans for International Aid & Adoption (AIAA) for placement. This wasn't an easy decision for us, but since making it we're very comfortable with - and excited about - this new direction. Again, I'll explain more in a couple of days about what led us to make this change.

Although it was a difficult decision, in the end, it won't significantly affect our adoption process. We are still adopting from Korea, and, due to the fact that AIAA's Korea adoption process tends to move more quickly than Lifelink's, we aren't really losing any time. We still hope to travel to Korea and bring our child home in late 2010 or early 2011.

The biggest change for us is that we'll be working with a different agency in Korea -- Lifelink works with Eastern Social Welfare Society (Eastern), and AIAA works with Social Welfare Society (SWS). Similar names, different agencies. Another big difference is that with Lifelink/Eastern, we were officially on the waiting list the day we submitted our application to Lifelink, while with AIAA/SWS, we will be officially waiting for a referral only after our home study and other paperwork are completed and sent to SWS in Korea.

So, now we are anxious to get things moving as quickly as possible. To that end, we have scheduled our final home study meeting (the home visit) for this upcoming Tuesday afternoon, May 4. After that, our social worker will write the home study, then I believe we have to get our state to approve it (along with some other documents perhaps...I really don't know), and then it all goes to AIAA, who will make sure everything looks ok before sending it on to SWS. We're hoping to be officially waiting for a referral in 2-3 months.

So, there you have it -- a quick (and very overdue) update. Hopefully since the adoption process is moving along again, I'll be a more consistent blogger. Hopefully.

  1. Thanks for the update! I have to say that given how things are going with Eastern these days I think that moving to an agency that works with SWS is a good thing!! (And I'm with Eastern ....)

  4. Dena, this is exciting news. I know it had to be a hard decision to switch - it was for us too, but I think it will prove to be a good choice.

We'll both be adopting from SWS :)

  9. We've been really happy with AIAA, and hope you are too. Like Kelly said, it seems like SWS moves things along more smoothly than ESWS at times. I'm certainly no expert, though...
I'm sure it's tough to change directions (slightly), but it'll be for the best!

  14. Nice to see a post from you, Dena. I'm sure the decision to switch was not an easy one. I hope things start moving along quickly for you now and you get on that waiting list soon!

  15. Hello,

We did the same thing. Lifelink for homestudy and Spence-Chapin for placing agency (we actually changed before we found out about the merger) . AIAA was actually a little too fast for us....so we went with a 3-10mos. to referral. It was better for our family. It is a huge step of faith to change as anything can happen with international adoption, but we take what info. we have now and make the best decision for us now. I was wondering what you were going to do?? (I had contacted you very early on in our adoption journey.) Congrats on your journey....

either way, i'm thrilled for you. we had a wonderful experience with aiaa and sws, too. i hope this move proves to be good one for you, and that the rest of your process (and your transition) is smooth. can't wait for more updates!

  18. Sounds like a good decision. I find it so interesting that the agencies in Korea move at such different paces. It is really too bad. Eastern is such a wonderful agency there. I just don't understand the differences, clearly.

  19. @ Kelly When you say "how things are going with Eastern these days" what does that refer to? We are just going to start with LIfelink in IL and the comment and folks switching agencies makes me a little nervous.

  20. Scubagal -- I wanted to contact you directly via blogger, but I don't see any contact info.

Briefly -- Eastern is experiencing very, very long waits for travel due a cap on EPs imposed by the Korean government. EP is basically the permission for a child to adopted out of the country. We are now working with SWS in Korea, and they aren't experiencing the same backlog that Eastern is.

Aside from that, we were also frustrated with a lack of communication from Lifelink and didn't feel comfortable continuing our adoption process with them.

Feel free to contact me if you'd like more info. There's a "contact us" link right under the "about us" section of our blog.
